So I’ve dealing with some health issues lately that I’ve found to be related to the way I sit in front of the computer, and I decided to write this post in order to help others who are dealing with the same situation. I’ve never really paid attention to my posture and the way I sit. It’s not something that I considered would affect me, so I would be that guy who sits in the most unconformable position for hours even when I noticed my circulation was affected by it. Since I was young, my body wasn’t complaining and even though my mother kept telling me to sit correctly, I would not listen to her and continue to work or play games in what could probably be described as the worst sitting position ever. All this changed a few months ago when I started to experience back pain.
At first I didn’t think much of it, I thought that if I ignored the pain it would eventually go away and everything would go back to normal. But that wasn’t the case. No only the pain didn’t go away, it actually started to become more intense as days passed. It got to the point where it was really difficult for me to be sitting without experiencing excruciating back pain. My legs were also affected, specially the muscles who started to have sporadic spasms and would hurt when trying to walk normally. I decided to visit my doctor and after telling him all my symptoms he immediately asked me about the way I sit when I’m using the computer. I told him the truth about my complete disregard to sitting correctly and to my surprise, he told me about several of his patients experiencing similar symptoms caused by the way they would sit every day.
Our bodies were not made to be sitting most of the day. In fact, our ancestors were hunters who were in constant movement, hunting their prey, bringing food to their families. But since the modern world doesn’t require us to move as much, we have adopted a sedentary way of living our lives. I had no idea being sitting all day was so harmful to our health. Apparently the reason my body wouldn’t complain about my awful posture before, was probably because I was younger and for some reason the human body has a way of quietly dealing with health issues until you get older. That’s when you start to feel the pain and your organism complains about everything that you’re doing wrong. I’ve learned my lesson and I now sit correctly, and take pauses every 30 minutes to get up and stretch. It’s important for my body and ever since I started doing it, the pain went away. Working out every day has also improved my health greatly. If you spend most of the day sitting in front of your computer, I recommend you start living a more active life. It will not only improve your health, it will also help you live longer.
